A black & white photo of a rock formation at Sunset Cliffs, San Diego. The rock formation has sharp jagged edges and ocean water is flowing over the top

Torn | Sunset Cliffs, San Diego

A jagged rock formation extends out into the ocean at Sunset Cliffs in San Diego. The tides bring gentle waves that flow over the top and are captured in a long exposure.

The Story Behind the Photo

I have a strong attaction to this spot in Sunset Cliffs, much like moths to a flame, and I keep coming back here. On the left we have the fractured rock leaving sharp jagged ridges and on the right we have the results of endless waves wearing away at the stone leaving smooth and rounded surfaces. A transformation all within a few feet but probably decades or maybe centuries in the making.
