A black and white photo of the potholes at Hospitals reef in La Jolla. The water is swirling in the little craters and appears as if the water is boiling.

Boil and Bubble | La Jolla

Waves rush in and leaves water swirling with a frothy white appearance in small craters at this sandstone rock formation known as The Potholes in La Jolla.

The Story Behind the Photo

The potholes in La Jolla is this amazing rock formation where the movement of the water has eroded little craters or potholes in the sandstone rock. Most people come here when the weather is great, we have blue skies, and the sun is shining. I like to come here on overcast and stormy days (well at least as stormy as we can get in SoCal). Nobody is around and if I time the tides right, the water just manages to rush over the rock and my feet as the waves come in. Most of the water recedes back into the ocean, but the potholes retain a bit of water and it swirls around continuing to erode the rock and deepening the craters. Like nature is busy boiling water for its own recipe.
