La Jolla is a gem and I don't think there's any place quite like it in the world. Although it's an urban area, it has natural beauty in abundance from the coastline with beaches and weathered sandstone rock that take on unique shapes to the wonderful Torrey pine trees in the namesake state reserve. And for some reason La Jolla seems to be a center of bioluminescent algae activity which results in glowing blue waves (this is a rare but incredible phenomenon, the closest analogy would be the California equivalent of the Northern Lights).
La Jolla is also a seaside neighborhood within the city of San Diego with a variety of educational institutions, businesses, and residential areas. There are some fascinating examples of Brutalist architecture, like the Geisel Library on UCSD campus, and there are other historic landmarks such as Scripps Pier and Mt Soledad Veterans Memorial. It's amazing being able to experience this all in one place.
