This photo has both the milky way core in the sky and the colors from sunset. The foreground shows the rocks along the La Jolla coast.

When the Sun and the Stars Collide | La Jolla

I didn't think it was actually possible to get a picture of the Milky Way at sunset but it happened to me. I had been searching for places to take a coastline shot of the MW in and about San Diego and then a friend suggested this place in La Jolla that she had scouted out that day. I had never been to this spot before and everything just came together and it turned out like magic. I owe her big time.

Sunset was at 6:15 and I made this image just after 7pm. I guess the sky was really clear and dry due to the Santa Ana winds and the core of the milky way became visible before the sunset completely faded.

About the Prints

32 x 32 inches

40 x 40 inches

Medium: Archival pigment print with acrylic facemount

This is a pigment print where the front has been directly mounted with an adhesive to a sheet of ultra clear, scratch resistant, and non-reflective acrylic glass. This process is known as face mounting. The acrylic captures light internally resulting in a display with incredible visual depth and vibrancy. With proper lighting, the acrylic print will appear to be back illuminated with the light emanating from the image itself. The print comes ready to hang with a hidden mount on the back that floats the print off the wall.

Please allow 4-5 weeks for production and delivery of your print. The prices include U.S. shipping, please contact me for international rates.
