A monterey cypress tree in Ellen Browning Scripps Park known as the Truffula tree or the Lorax Tree.

The Truffula Tree | Monterey Cypress, Ellen Browning Scripps Park, La Jolla

A Monterey Cypress tree affectionately known as the Truffula Tree because it was thought to be the inspiration of the trees in The Lorax by Dr Seuss.

The Story Behind the Photo

I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees. I speak for the trees for the trees have no tongues.

This is the Truffula Tree in Scripps Park, La Jolla. The tree is actually a Monterey Cypress but it's thought to be the inspiration for Dr Seuss' Truffula trees in The Lorax. Dr Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) lived in La Jolla and could see the tree from the observation tower in his home.

I photographed this during a sunset in April, 2018. There were low clouds on the horizon and right above me condensing as the wind came ashore. I didn't think the sunset would turn out but I stuck around and luckily there were also some higher clouds in the sky that caught that last light with a great pink glow.

Unfortunately in June 2019 the tree fell for an unknown reason and is no more. The cypress was thought to be between 80 to 100 years old.

Acrylic Fine Art Print with a Float Mount — Ready to Hang

Trulife Acrylic Fine Art Print

This is a photographic print where the front has been directly adhered to a sheet of TruLife acrylic which is an ultra clear, scratch resistant, and anti-reflective glazing. This process is known as face mounting. The acrylic captures light internally and bounces it off the surface of the print resulting in a display with incredible depth and vibrancy. With proper lighting, the acrylic print will appear to have light emanating from the image itself. The back of the print is sealed with another layer of protective acrylic.

The print comes ready to hang with hidden mounting hardware on the back that makes the print appear as if it is floating in front of the wall. No additional framing is needed. Choose this medium for a modern and minimalist presentation.

Print is signed and numbered on verso (back).

Please allow 4-6 weeks for production and delivery of your print. The prices include U.S. shipping, please inquire for international rates.
