A super-bloom of flowers in the Anza Borrego desert. Delicate evening primrose flowers are surrounded by vibrant purple desert verbena.
This year (2017) we had a superbloom in Anza Borrego due to a tremendous amount of rain (for the desert) that we received. A superbloom is a rare event and I'm told it occurs perhaps once a decade. Well this was an opportune time as California has been in severe drought for the past five years with heavily depleted water reserves and diminished snowpack.
Most of the time Anza Borrego is an inhospitable desert. It's only during a few spring weeks, with adequate rainfall over the winter, that we see this splendid display of nature. I hope we see more of these heavy blooms but nature is unpredictable.
