This is a view of Scripps pier from between the support pylons. The moon is setting and can be seen aligned in the center of the opening.

Moon Gate | Scripps Pier, La Jolla

Every lunar cycle, the moon takes a wandering path across the sky. Sometimes it rises and sets further to the south, other times it is more northerly. However on this day it set at 289.6 degrees which perfectly aligned it with the opening at the end of Scripps Pier. I was further fortunate in that there was no marine layer to block the view.

The underside of Scripps Pier has always reminded me of a gate. In this case, for a brief moment taking me straight to the moon, a reminder that even if it appears most of the time like there's nothing at the end of our path, things change and it's just a matter of time.

I took this photo just a few minutes before moonset on 3/18/19. The time was around 5:25 a.m. or about 1.5 hours before sunrise. I believe this is the first photo ever taken with the moon aligned in the center of the pier's opening.

Medium: Archival pigment print with acrylic facemount

This is a pigment print where the front has been directly mounted with an adhesive to a sheet of ultra clear, scratch resistant, and non-reflective acrylic glass. This process is known as face mounting. The acrylic captures light internally resulting in a display with incredible visual depth and vibrancy. With proper lighting, the acrylic print will appear to be back illuminated with the light emanating from the image itself. The print comes ready to hang with a hidden mount on the back that floats the print off the wall.

Please allow 4-5 weeks for production and delivery of your print. The prices include U.S. shipping, please contact me for international rates.
