A grove of torrey pines trees is covered by a blanket of fog on the Guy Fleming trail. The bare branches of the trees reach toward the sky.
Unfortunately this is a sad story of a beautiful grove that is now gone. These are the torrey pine trees that grew along the Guy Fleming trail in Torrey Pines. I've always loved the shape of these trees and the ways that the branches twist and turn toward the sky. I would come here frequently to hike especially when it was foggy or overcast.
The sad part is that these trees have all died. They were weakened by a prolonged drought that impacted their ability to produce sap and ultimately they succumbed to the bark beatle. If you go today, you cannot even see the grove anymore as during a winter storm the trees fell over. They are just left in broken pieces on the ground.
