I took advantage of a record heat wave and the extremely dry conditions brought by the Santa Ana winds to capture star trails over downtown. The dewpoint was around 40 degrees at night and the low humidity increases visibility (less moisture in the air to reflect light pollution). This is a shot that I've been thinking about taking for the better part of a year. I made my first attempt on a Tuesday night and photographed for about an hour but I realized when I got home that one hour wasn't going to be long enough. Even though we had clear skies, with the light pollution very few stars were visibile and the short recording time meant that the trails weren't long enough in the image.
So I went back out on Wednesday night and then shot for three hours to get longer trails. As a bonus, there are almost no planes flying around after midnight. On the other hand, flying drones downtown late at night is very popular. Luckily the drones stayed low and didn't go much above the building tops.

Medium: Archival pigment print with acrylic facemount
This is a pigment print where the front has been directly mounted with an adhesive to a sheet of ultra clear, scratch resistant, and non-reflective acrylic glass. This process is known as face mounting. The acrylic captures light internally resulting in a display with incredible visual depth and vibrancy. With proper lighting, the acrylic print will appear to be back illuminated with the light emanating from the image itself. The print comes ready to hang with a hidden mount on the back that floats the print off the wall.
Please allow 4-5 weeks for production and delivery of your print. The prices include U.S. shipping, please contact me for international rates.
